STI Jobs Latest Update: The Short Version

Here is the STI jobs latest update as of 30 September 2026, in five points:

  1. Fresh hiring approved: on 25 September 2026 the School Education Department allowed fresh hiring of School Teacher Interns against vacant seats.
  2. District-wise seats: hiring will follow a district-wise allocation under the STI Program 2024.
  3. Serving interns continue: Phase 1 and Phase 2 interns continue through fresh agreements until 31 May 2027.
  4. Extra allowance: an additional Rs15,000 monthly allowance was approved for eligible interns on 16 September, subject to revised terms.
  5. No schedule yet: no application link, last date or merit list date has been announced for fresh hiring.

What the 25 September 2026 Notification Says

The most important STI notification 2026 so far was issued on 25 September. It was addressed to the Chief Executive Officers of all District Education Authorities and marked as a top priority. It did two things:

DecisionDetails
Continuation of serving STIsFresh agreements from 24 August 2026 to 31 May 2027
Fresh hiringAgainst vacant STI slots, under the STI Program 2024 and a district-wise allocation
ComplianceDistricts asked to act immediately and send a compliance report

The notice did not include a portal link or dates. That is why we say fresh hiring is approved but not yet open. Read the full breakdown in our STI recruitment 2026 report.

Contract and Allowance Updates

For serving interns, 2026 was a stressful year. Contracts ended on 22 May before the summer holidays, and around 25,000 interns waited months for a decision. Then things moved quickly in September:

  • 10 September: the Chief Minister approved the STI summary, and the Education Minister said interns would return to schools.
  • 16 September: continuation approved for Phase 1 and Phase 2 interns until 31 May 2027, with an extra Rs15,000 monthly allowance under revised terms. Interns who left before 31 May 2026 are not eligible for the extension.
  • 25 September: the notification set the fresh agreement period as 24 August 2026 to 31 May 2027.

If you are a serving intern, see our STI fresh agreement guide and the STI rejoining checklist.

Stipend and Payment Updates

Payments have been the biggest worry for interns. In February 2026, reports said around 12,000 interns had not been paid for December, January and February, even though the Education Minister had said in late January that pending salaries would be cleared within 14 days. In April, the department said stipends must stay within the approved budget.

The stipend itself is Rs38,000 (primary), Rs40,000 (middle) and Rs45,000 (high and higher secondary) under the STI Program 2024. Estimate yours with the STI salary calculator, and if your payment is late, follow the steps in STI stipend delay 2026.

What Happened to the 2025 Hiring Cycle

Understanding the last cycle helps you predict the next one. Applications for 12,500 interns opened on 12 November 2025 with a Rs1,000 fee per school. The last date moved from 21 to 24 and then 26 November, and more than 220,000 people applied.

A new merit timeline followed on 3 December: initial lists on 3 December, objections on 4 and 5 December, interviews on 6 and 7 December, the final list on 8 December and appointment orders planned for 9 December. But on 18 December, appointment letters were put on hold again while objections to the final list were heard until 22 December. In February 2026, hiring of 12,500 more interns was reported to be on hold, and on 7 April 2026 new recruitment was stopped while budgets were sorted out.

The lesson is simple: STI schedules change. Apply early, keep every receipt and watch this page for changes. Details are in our STI merit list 2026 guide.

When Will STI Jobs Start in 2026?

This is the most searched question right now. The honest answer is that no start date has been announced. Based on the notification and the last cycle, the steps should be:

  1. Districts receive and confirm their share of vacant STI seats.
  2. The online application window opens, likely for around two weeks.
  3. Merit lists appear on school notice boards, followed by objections and interviews.
  4. Final lists and appointment orders are issued, and selected interns join schools.

Track the application window on our STI online apply 2026 last date page and check seats on the district-wise vacancies page. Meanwhile, get ready with the eligibility checker, documents checklist and school finder.
