The Punjab Sargodha road projects approved package marks a significant infrastructure investment for the district, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approving eight schemes for the construction, rehabilitation and improvement of roads in Sargodha district under the Own Source Revenue initiative. The total estimated cost of the projects comes to nearly Rs. 1 billion.
Breakdown of the Punjab Sargodha Road Projects Approved
According to a press release from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the schemes include the construction and rehabilitation of Dairy Road, Azad Road, New Urdu Bazaar Road, Grain Market Road, Pilot School Road and Ara Market Road, with this cluster of projects costing Rs. 175.79 million combined.
The plan also includes rehabilitation of the Khayam Chowk Overhead Bridge at Rs. 88.981 million, along with the road from Johar Colony Road to Fatima Jinnah Road via Gillwala Railway Crossing to Haripurah Bridge, budgeted at Rs. 228.674 million, making it the single largest allocation within this package of projects.
Additional Road and Beautification Projects
Other projects include the rehabilitation of the Shama Chowk to Stadium Gate road and the link road to Cheema Heart Centre for Rs. 164.645 million, as well as Main Bazaar Bhagtanwala Road and the Lahore Road-Bhirowal-Kot Momin Link Road for Rs. 127.715 million, covering both urban commercial areas and inter-town connectivity.
The government has also approved rehabilitation of Jail Road to Shahpur Saddar Road in Shahpur for Rs. 98.888 million and Farooka Road to Sial Dhulaka Road for Rs. 56.684 million. A Rs. 60 million beautification project for interchanges along Sial Mor Road rounds out the program, adding an aesthetic and urban-planning dimension alongside the primarily functional road works.
Expected Impact on Residents
Deputy Commissioner Sargodha Hussain Ahmad Raza Chaudhry said the projects would improve the district’s road infrastructure, traffic flow and transportation facilities for residents in both urban and rural areas. Given the geographic spread of the approved projects, from central bazaar roads to inter-town link roads, the improvements are likely to benefit a broad cross-section of Sargodha’s population rather than concentrating investment in a single area.
Funding Mechanism
These projects are being funded under the Own Source Revenue initiative, a mechanism that allows districts to fund local development projects using revenue generated within the district itself, rather than relying solely on provincial or federal transfers. This approach can give district administrations more direct control over how locally generated funds are reinvested into community infrastructure.
