Latest News: Punjab Primary Curriculum 2027 – 25% Lighter Books With QR Code Video Lessons

Good news is coming for primary school children and their teachers in Punjab. The provincial government is preparing a revised Punjab primary curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) to Grade 5. The new books will be about 25 percent lighter, and each book will carry QR codes that open short video lessons. The plan is to put these books in children’s hands before the new academic session starts in April 2027.

Below we explain the full plan, the timeline, what changes for teachers in classrooms, and the concerns that experts have raised.

Punjab Primary Curriculum 2027: What Is Changing

The decision was discussed in an education reforms meeting of the Punjab government. The main aim is to reduce the academic burden on young students and move from rote learning towards conceptual learning and digital support.

  • 25% lighter textbooks: the volume of content in primary books will be reduced by about one quarter.
  • QR code video lessons: students can scan a code with a phone or tablet and watch a video on that topic.
  • Focus on concepts and understanding rather than memorising long answers.
  • Applies from ECCE (pre-school) to Grade 5.

Timeline of the New Curriculum

According to a senior official of the Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), the revised curriculum has already been prepared and sent to Cambridge International Education for review and comparison with international standards.

Why Lighter Textbooks Are Needed

Heavy school bags have been a long-running complaint of parents in Punjab. Along with compulsory textbooks, many children, especially in private schools in Lahore and other big cities, carry grammar books, maths practice books, general knowledge books, computer books and activity workbooks. Long homework and pressure to finish many subjects in a short school day add to the stress.

A 25 percent cut in book content is expected to ease some of this pressure. Teachers will also get more time in class to explain concepts properly instead of rushing to finish the syllabus.

How QR Code Video Lessons Will Work

Each new book will have QR codes printed next to selected topics. When a student or parent scans the code with a mobile phone, a short video lesson on that topic will open. Difficult maths ideas, science experiments and other tricky lessons can be shown through demonstrations and visuals.

Benefits for Teachers and Students

  • Students can revise lessons at home and learn at their own pace.
  • Teachers, including STI interns and new teachers, can use the videos as a ready teaching aid in class.
  • Parents who cannot help with homework can use videos to guide their children.
  • Classrooms become more interactive by mixing reading with audio-visual material.

Concerns Raised by Educationists

Experts welcome the idea but say the real benefit depends on how it is implemented. If private schools keep adding supplementary books, practice material and heavy homework, a thinner textbook alone will not lighten the school bag. The government will need to make sure that both public and private schools follow the revised curriculum and do not expand the workload on their own.

Access to devices is another question. Many children in rural Punjab do not have a smartphone or internet at home, so schools may need to show the videos in class using a multimedia projector or a tablet.

What Teachers Should Do Now

Primary school teachers should prepare for the shift by learning basic digital skills, such as scanning QR codes, playing video lessons in class and using simple classroom technology. Training sessions for the new curriculum are likely before the April session, so teachers should watch for notices from their AEOs and district education authorities. Official updates will be shared by PECTAA on its official website.
