More than 1 million Pakistanis have now registered for the government’s Fuel Relief Scheme, a subsidy program aimed at easing fuel costs for owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, and small vehicles up to 800cc across the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to figures released by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, more than 800,000 fuel subsidy tokens have already been generated nationwide since the scheme’s rollout, reflecting strong uptake in just a matter of weeks. The program is designed to directly benefit lower-income transport users who rely on smaller-capacity vehicles for daily commuting and livelihood activities.
How the Fuel Relief Scheme Registration Works
Eligible citizens can register for the scheme by sending an SMS to the designated short-code 9771. To remove any financial barrier to participation, Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja directed telecom operators to waive the standard Rs. 1.40 charge previously applied to these registration messages, making the process entirely free for applicants.
Once registered, eligible vehicle owners receive a token that can be redeemed at designated fuel stations for subsidized pricing. A 24-hour control room has been established to monitor registrations, token generation, and redemptions in real time, allowing authorities to track uptake and address any bottlenecks as they emerge.
Where Uptake Has Been Strongest
Data from the scheme’s control room shows Punjab and Islamabad recording the highest redemption numbers so far, suggesting stronger awareness and access to participating fuel stations in these regions compared to other parts of the country. Authorities have indicated that additional details about station locations and eligibility criteria remain available on the government’s dedicated scheme website.
The rapid uptake — crossing the 1 million registration mark within weeks — signals significant demand for fuel cost relief among Pakistan’s motorcycle and small-vehicle owners, a demographic that has been particularly affected by fluctuating fuel prices in recent years. The scheme’s momentum will likely keep growing as awareness spreads to areas currently showing lower redemption activity.
The relief scheme comes alongside broader shifts in Pakistan’s fuel pricing landscape, where oil marketing companies are simultaneously pressing regulators for their own margin increases, highlighting the multiple pressures shaping retail fuel costs nationwide.
