Pakistan’s monsoon season is delivering one final, potentially disruptive spell this week, with disaster management authorities in both Punjab and Sindh issuing fresh warnings about urban flooding, landslides and heavy rainfall through the coming days.

Punjab’s Final Monsoon Spell

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Punjab is expected to receive its ninth and final spell of monsoon rain starting today, with heavy rainfall forecast across most districts until September 17. The PDMA has flagged Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad as cities at heightened risk of urban flooding, warning that intense rainfall could overwhelm drainage infrastructure in low-lying neighborhoods. The authority has also warned of possible landslides in Murree, the Galiyat region and other mountainous parts of Punjab, where saturated slopes become more vulnerable during extended heavy rain.

Sindh Braces for Rain as Well

The Sindh PDMA has issued its own advisory, warning of rain and thunderstorms across several districts from September 13 to 16, tied to a monsoon low tracking westward from the Bay of Bengal. The Met Department expects Karachi to see light rain and thunderstorms from September 14 to 16, while Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Thatta and several other districts should expect dust-thunderstorm activity with isolated heavy rainfall. Sindh’s Adviser on Rehabilitation, Giyanchand Essrani, has directed deputy commissioners and the PDMA to keep staff and equipment on standby, with the Emergency Rescue Service 1122 also placed on high alert through the forecast period.
