Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal has announced that the upcoming Karachi IT Park is expected to create around 15,000 jobs and generate up to $100 million in annual ICT exports. The project is being developed as a regional technology hub for Pakistan’s largest city and is seen as a major step towards expanding the country’s digital economy.
The Karachi IT Park is a flagship E-Pakistan project under the government’s Uraan Pakistan initiative. It is being developed by the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) near Jinnah International Airport, a location chosen for its easy access and connectivity for local and international companies.
Ahsan Iqbal shared details of the project on social media, saying the IT Park is set to transform Pakistan’s digital landscape. The announcement has generated interest among young IT graduates and freelancers in Karachi, who are looking for more opportunities in the local technology sector.
Karachi IT Park Features and Budget
The project will feature a tech campus with around 1.18 million square feet of covered space. It will house 220 modern offices for IT companies, 30 dedicated startup spaces and a Tier-III data centre. A Tier-III data centre offers high reliability and redundancy, which is important for companies that provide cloud, software and data services to international clients.
The federal government has allocated Rs. 3.75 billion for the project under the Public Sector Development Programme for 2026-27. Official budget documents show that Rs. 3.745 billion has been earmarked for the Karachi IT Park in the current fiscal year, reflecting the government’s priority for the IT sector.
The facility is intended to support IT companies, startups and technology-focused businesses, while strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy and export capacity. By bringing companies together in one modern campus, the government hopes to create an ecosystem where businesses, investors and skilled workers can connect more easily.
Pakistan’s IT exports have been growing in recent years, and the government has set ambitious targets to increase them further. Dedicated IT parks with reliable power, high-speed internet and modern office space are considered essential to attract foreign clients and help local companies scale up their operations.
Karachi already has a large pool of IT talent, with thousands of students graduating every year from local universities in computer science and related fields. However, many of them move abroad or to other cities in search of better opportunities, and the new IT Park is expected to help retain this talent within the city.
When Will the Karachi IT Park Be Ready?
The project is currently under construction. In June, a National Assembly committee noted that the project was still in its initial stages and directed authorities to speed up the work. With funding now allocated in the current PSDP, officials are expected to accelerate construction activities in the coming months.
Once completed, the Karachi IT Park could provide thousands of jobs for software developers, designers, data specialists, customer support staff and other professionals. Students and fresh graduates in IT-related fields are advised to build their skills in areas such as software development, cloud computing, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, as demand for these skills is expected to rise as new facilities like this one come online. Similar IT parks are also being developed in Islamabad and other cities as part of the government’s wider plan to boost the technology sector.
