Pakistan has formally launched the FIFA Football for Schools programme, an initiative aimed at introducing football to an estimated three million students across 3,000 schools nationwide as part of a global FIFA effort to promote grassroots football development.
The programme, run in partnership with football’s global governing body, is designed to integrate football-based physical education into the school curriculum, providing training for physical education teachers and equipping schools with footballs and coaching materials to run structured sessions for students.
What the Programme Involves
FIFA Football for Schools is a joint initiative between FIFA and UNESCO that has already been rolled out in dozens of countries worldwide, aiming to use football as a tool to promote physical activity, life skills, and gender equality among school-age children. In Pakistan, the programme will be implemented in coordination with the Pakistan Football Federation and provincial education departments.
Officials say the rollout will prioritize government schools in the initial phase, with training sessions for physical education teachers being organized to ensure the programme’s football curriculum is delivered consistently across participating schools. The initiative also includes components on health education and life skills delivered alongside football training sessions.
A Boost for Grassroots Football
Football officials in Pakistan have described the launch as a significant opportunity to widen the sport’s reach beyond its traditional strongholds in Balochistan and parts of Karachi and Lahore, potentially uncovering talent among millions of school-age children who may otherwise never be exposed to organized football training.
The programme is expected to be scaled up in phases over the coming years, with FIFA providing technical support and monitoring implementation progress in partnership with local football and education authorities. Officials say the long-term goal is to build a sustainable pipeline of young football talent while also promoting physical fitness and healthy habits among school children across the country.
