The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index shedding 720.83 points as selling pressure gripped the market across a wide range of sectors.
The index settled at 176,975.68 points, down 0.41 percent from the previous session’s close of 177,696.51 points. The decline reflected a broadly negative trading session, with losses outweighing gains across the market.
Market Breadth Turns Negative
Out of the companies traded during the session, 302 closed lower, while only 169 posted gains and 32 remained unchanged, pointing to widespread selling pressure rather than losses concentrated in a handful of heavyweight stocks.
Despite the overall decline, some counters bucked the trend. Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited and Attock Refinery Limited were among the notable gainers of the day, attracting buying interest even as the broader index slipped.
On the losing side, food and consumer sector stocks were hit particularly hard. Rafhan Maize Products Company Limited fell by Rs49.89, while Nestle Pakistan Limited dropped by Rs47.45, dragging on sentiment in the sector.
Trading Volumes Rise
Interestingly, the decline came alongside a notable increase in trading activity. Ready market volume reached 937.27 million shares, with a traded value of Rs39.134 billion, up sharply from the previous session’s 658.327 million shares worth Rs31.454 billion. The higher volumes alongside falling prices suggest active repositioning by investors rather than a lack of market participation.
What’s Driving the Selloff
Stock market analysts often point to a mix of factors when broad-based selling occurs, including profit-taking after recent gains, caution ahead of macroeconomic data releases, and reactions to global market cues. Pakistani equities have also shown sensitivity in recent sessions to developments in international oil markets and broader regional geopolitical tensions, which can influence investor risk appetite.
The PSX has seen volatile trading in recent weeks, with sessions of sharp gains often followed by corrections as investors lock in profits. Market participants will be watching upcoming economic indicators, including inflation data and currency movements, for cues on the market’s near-term direction.
For investors, days of heavy selling combined with rising volumes are typically viewed as a sign of active portfolio rebalancing rather than a fundamental shift in market outlook, though continued weakness across multiple sessions would warrant closer attention to broader economic trends, including fuel prices and currency stability.
