Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak Hits US Weeks Before FIFA World Cup 2026

US health officials are monitoring passengers in multiple states after a deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. The situation has raised concerns ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations in the United States.

According to reports, the outbreak has caused three deaths and several confirmed or suspected infections since April 2026. The World Health Organization has also issued an international health alert over the virus spread.

Authorities in Georgia, California, and Arizona are currently observing travelers who recently returned from the cruise ship. Officials say no symptoms have been reported among monitored individuals so far.

The cruise journey started from Argentina before the outbreak was fully identified. Health agencies in several countries are now conducting contact tracing to find passengers who may have been exposed.

Countries including Canada, Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Singapore, and the United States are involved in the international investigation. The outbreak has increased concerns about travel-related health risks before major global events.

Experts say the Andes strain of hantavirus is more dangerous because limited person-to-person transmission has previously been reported. Most hantavirus infections usually spread through infected rodent saliva, urine, or droppings.

The latest virus alert comes as millions of football fans are expected to travel during FIFA World Cup 2026. Health authorities say the situation is under close monitoring to prevent further spread.

Officials have advised travelers to follow safety guidelines and report any flu-like symptoms immediately. More updates are expected as investigations continue worldwide.
